Charles is the Portfolio Manager of ValueWorks, responsible for the investment decisions of the portfolio and the overall strategic vision of the firm; he has 25 plus years of investment experience. Before founding ValueWorks in 2001 he worked for Gruntal & Co., first as a securities analyst for nearly 10 years, then as a portfolio manager in his final 5 years with the company. In his coverage of distressed debt, arbitrage opportunities and takeover stocks, Charles honed skills in financial markets, statement analysis and in valuing a diverse range of businesses and assets that continue to inform his investment decisions and philosophy today. He is a frequent guest in the financial media: CNBC, Bloomberg and the Wall St Journal.

Charles received his Bachelor’s degree in History from Vassar College and pursued graduate studies in Economics at New York University. He received his Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 1989 and is a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts.


Steve is responsible for the marketing efforts of ValueWorks and all of the firm’s operational issues. Before joining ValueWorks, Steve was the Director of Operations for Xceed Inc., an internet consulting firm. While at Xceed Steve managed a team responsible for understanding and monitoring corporate efficiency, streamlining processes and controlling costs. Steve received his MBA at NYU’s Stern School of Business; he earned a Law Degree (LLB) from City University in London, England; Steve received his BA degrees in Philosophy and Mathematics from St John’s College, Santa Fe, NM.


Eric is responsible for increasing ValueWorks’ AUM and the number of channels through which the company operates. Before joining ValueWorks, Eric was a Senior Analyst at Goldman Sachs & Co. in the Global Control Department. Prior to this, he ran his own international business and economic development consulting practice focusing primarily on East Asia. Earlier, Eric worked in international research and consulting in both the public and private sectors. Eric earned an MA in International Affairs at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs; he received his BA from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. A Fulbright Scholar in Japan and Southeast Asia, Eric resided in Asia for over four years and is conversant in Mandarin Chinese.


Eric is involved in all aspects of the research process at ValueWorks and works closely with Charles to determine the timing of purchase and sale decisions for the portfolios. Before joining ValueWorks, Eric was a research analyst at the IU Foundation, a $5.6 billion fund dedicated to maximizing resources for Indiana University. Prior to this, he was an analyst at Artist Capital, a hedge fund advisory firm focused on the distribution and asset management of alternative managers. Eric earned his MBA from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN; he received his BA from Indiana University.
